News...Two Taylor node 360°; mini recycling centres, installed at the Moss Road Estate in Cannock to combat low recycling figures, have, within four months of installation, achieved an average collection rate of 3,200 litres of recyclate per unit each fortnight. The rate prior to installation of the node°; units was practically non-existent.
Recycling rates for high-rise and multi-occupancy dwellings are typically extremely poor across the UK. The nature of the buildings make collection a logistical nightmare and it is often simpler for residents to dispose of all their waste through a single means.
With increased national pressures to improve recycling rates, Cannock Chase Council worked in consultation with Moss Road Estate residents to develop a recycling solution that was practical and efficient. Cannock Chase Council had already employed Taylor's innovative node°; collection centres in the town centre with much success and was aware that installation in similar high-density areas had been found to dramatically improve recycling in short periods of time.
Anthony Morris, Recycling Officer for Cannock Chase Council, comments: "The Taylor node°; units have been a great success and are proving to be extremely popular with all the residents that we have spoken to. In the first couple of weeks there were a few contamination issues, but since then there have been no problems. The residents have been very receptive to change and the increased recycling levels speak for themselves."
The Taylor node°; is designed to improve recycling rates for locations where traditional forms of collection aren't possible. Its distinctive design makes waste separation and collection easy, while only taking up a small footprint on the street. Available in four configurations, from the single unit node 90°; to the full node 360°;, the node°; can be ideally located in most street scenes and enjoys almost unanimous praise from both the public and waste planning professionals.
Since its launch the node°; has been the focus of several independent reports into urban recycling rates. "Taking recycling to a new level", by the Caledonian Research Centre, found that within 7 weeks of installation the node°; produced recycling rates of almost 2.1kg per household per week. These results were supported by LRS Consultancy's "Capital gains from recycling" which found improvements of 175% in recycling rates in three boroughs of London upon the introduction of node°; units.
Bob Harris, UK Sales Manager for Taylor, adds: "The Taylor node°; is fast becoming the most effective method for improving recycling rates in high-density residential areas, as well as urban scenes such as parks and town centres. The node°; is simple to use and provides residents with a quick means of disposal. It has also been designed to fit aesthetically with its surroundings and to keep a small footprint, so as to remain unobtrusive."
Anthony Morris continues:"It is refreshing to work with a company such as Taylor that understands the new issues councils are facing and works with us to develop the right solution. The recycling rates that we have seen over the last few months at Moss Road East have been so impressive that we may soon be installing a third node°; in the area."
