East Ayrshire introduces innovative solution for WEEE

As the debate rages over how best to maximise WEEE collections, a Scottish Local Authority has found an innovative solution to making WEEE recycling facilities accessible to residents when doing their weekly shopping.

Until now, WEEE materials could only be deposited at the council’s larger civic amenity facilities, and, although these larger sites are very popular, the new facility in Kilmarnock adds a new dimension to the service by making it convenient for residents to recycle small electrical goods whilst popping into the local supermarket.

The recycling points themselves are the new Street™ from Taylor, the specialist UK container manufacturer from the West Midlands and local Area Business Manager, Bobby Gavin, is delighted to see the new product used in such a pioneering way. “The original design brief was to provide a product that offered the public a stylish recycling point; what East Ayrshire have done though is to take the original concept, and with the aid of some slick branding and a clever collection system, provided residents with what is perhaps the first Recycle on the Go system for WEEE in Scotland”. “And even if it’s not the first, we definitely think it’s the best looking..!”

This message is reinforced by Leader of East Ayrshire Council Doulas Reid “The opportunity for our residents to recycle WEEE was introduced in 2008 via our Recycling Centres. Since then over 1500 tonnes of WEEE, which might otherwise have ended up in landfill has been recycled. What we identified was that we were collecting lots of the larger items of WEEE. We wanted to see if we could increase the capture of the smaller hand held items, which we suspected were still being placed in general rubbish bins. And, the results are really encouraging. Small WEEE Recycling on the Go has taken off. So much so, that we are now looking to introduce similar collection banks at other locations across East Ayrshire.”
